This December, Dual Frequency is thrilled to share with you a brand new interactive diversity calendar that can be used in schools, education settings and other organisations to ensure you never miss a significant date in the EDI calendar.

Why is the diversity calendar important?

Because diversity matters, every single day! The more we immerse ourselves in diverse groups,  the more we will be able to celebrate positive representation of these groups, and the richer our communities become.

How can you implement the diversity calendar within your organisation?

The diversity calendar includes a mixture of equality, diversity and inclusion related events along with key dates. This is not intended as an exhaustive list. At a glance you can see the key dates that are listed each month, click the date to be signposted to a resource and more information, plus suggestions of how you can celebrate the date.

How does the colour code in the diversity calendar 2021 work?

The calendar is colour coded to the strands of the Equality Act 2010. It is important to value everybody’s contribution to society all year round: far too many communities are so regularly overlooked in the Gregorian calendar. By focusing on the protected characteristics that fall under the Equality Act, our hope is these communities will no longer be overlooked but celebrated in contrast.

Some top tips for making your diversity, equality and inclusion calendar 2021 work in your school or organisation

  1. Remember to celebrate diversity every day, not just on awareness days (whilst still understanding that celebrating awareness days is great)

  2. Weave diverse stories into all areas of the national curriculum, there are some great organisation out there who can work with you on this (including us)

  3. Teach children, young people and staff about the importance of equality, diversity and inclusion being the bedrock of a good institution

  4. Share with children, young people and staff the United Nations Rights of the child, we have made some handy teen friendly versions which are FREE

  5. Share our poster on the Equality Act 2010 with children, young people, parents, carers and staff - also FREE!

  6. Use social media to your advantage, does your school have a Twitter, Instagram, Facebook page etc? Share key dates from the calendar using eye catching imagery

  7. The objective of this calendar is to make the school environment more inclusive, to do this we should engage with and listen to young people and staff. Invite them to contribute their ideas to key events in the diary - you will be surprised about how many are willing to help

  8. Remember that the impact of these dates in the calendar will vary from person to person, be mindful that topics can bring up emotions and young people and staff should feel they have a safe space to talk about their thoughts and feelings (should they wish to)

  9. Share the calendar with children, young people, parents and carers

  10. Make a pledge to make further steps to be a more inclusive institution - we have added some ideas for you below (we are nice like that)

Some ideas for making your institution more inclusive

  1. If you haven’t already, implement an equality, diversity and inclusion policy for the school (get in touch if you need help with this, we offer consultancy on helping you embed policies within your school)

  2. Make equality, diversity and inclusion training mandatory for all (we can provide this to you as a full or half day - get in touch for a quote)

  3. Set up a group in your school (this could be LGBTQI+, faith etc.) - we advise getting young people involved in the establishment of these groups, those with lived experience are the best placed to outline the groups objectives

  4. Teach Black history, check out the Black Curriculum who have loads of resources about this

  5. Conduct a diversity audit of the curriculum you are delivering. We have a template for this, get in touch to discuss this with us

  6. Using your diversity audit - implement outcomes based on the gaps in your curriculum

  7. Have diverse signage up around the school consistently, that is inclusive for all (e.g. try not to put an LGBTQ+ awareness poster up only in LGBTQ+ history month - have it up all year round)

  8. Check your recruitment policies are robust and inclusive, do you have a staff base that reflects the identities of the student population?

  9. Make the whole school message of the year a focus on equality, diversity and inclusion
